The Umbrella Academy star Tom Hopper and his wife have opened up on having a child with autism. Parents who raise autistic children need a different kind of energy and belief. Tom Hopper, who also played the role of Dickon Tarly in Game of Thrones has spoken about their experience of raising their five-year-old son who is autistic.
Freddie, their son was 18 months old when Tom and Laura noticed something was different. Laura said “the first thing we noticed was Freddie wouldn’t turn around for his name.” She also added “from there, the older he got, the more of a gap there was between him and other children his age, in terms of his progress.”
While explaining why they decided to open up he said Tom said in an interview: “We thought, we’ve got to do this for the parents that are going through this so they don’t feel alone… because it can be a very lonely time.”
They also talked about their daughter Rose who helps them have a better life. Tom said while describing her “she’s a Daddy’s girl and I adore it. She’s going to walk all over my wallet.”
Tom also talked about the intense research they both did in order to understand Freddie. Each child is different and they all need different kind of care and affection. That is why they “had to figure out what works for him and what doesn’t.”
