A 42-year-old man who stole over 200 LOL dolls from a toy store at a South Belfast shopping center was jailed today for the “brazen” theft.
Stephen Casement, from Avoca Street in Belfast, was convicted for the theft at Drumkeen Retail Park at a remote hearing of Downpatrick Crown Court.
A remote hearing was conducted at Downpatrick Crown Court, where the prosecution presented a CCTV footage as evidence. The video shows the defendant entering the toy store three times in a five minute period on the evening of 3 October 2018.
Each time, he removed boxes of the dolls from the store and placed them in the boot of a Volkswagen Passat in the car park. Three other people were in the vehicle.
The CCTV footage of the theft was circulated between staff members, with an employee recognizing Casement from a Facebook page. Casement was arrested and during his interview with the police, he gave a ‘no comment’ response.
Finally, it was estimated that dolls worth £2,796 were stolen. They were never recovered.
Defense barrister Peter Coiley said his client accepted he will receive “longer and longer prison sentences” if he continues to offend. He said Casement’s behavior was a result of his addiction to drugs.
