ICE detainees undergoing unconsented hysterectomies and medical neglect

In Georgia’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center, immigrants face medical neglect and some even undergo hysterectomies. This information was provided by a nurse who previously worked at the said detention center in Georgia, USA. Complaints were thus filed by several advocacy groups on behalf of the nurse.

Employed at the Irwin County detention center in Georgia, the nurse had been in the field for 10 years. She spent three years in the center run by a private corporation LaSalle Corrections. Post the nurse’s dissent, an advocacy group filed the complaint under negligence. The Guardian reported, “The complaint, filed on her behalf on 14 September by the human rights legal groups the Government Accountability Project and Project South, accused the center of negligence, including poor safety precautions surrounding the pandemic and generally hazardous and unsanitary conditions”

The complaint also stated that the immigrants that portrayed dissent were reprimanded and pushed into solitary confinement. In an interview with the Intercept, the nurse stated that she faced demotion and was reprimanded for raising her concerns about these practices.

The nurse also reported in the same interview that a disturbingly high amount of Spanish speaking immigrants underwent hysterectomies, unaware of the need of the same. This was done mostly on people who had heavy menstruation and due to the language barrier, nurses or doctors did not get clear consent.

The nurse further stated, “Everybody he sees has a hysterectomy – just about everybody. That’s his specialty, he’s the uterus collector. Everybody’s uterus cannot be that bad.”

Detainees also complained about lack of safety during the conduction of these procedures. A detainee, who remains unnamed for safety concerns, states, “When I met all these women who had had surgeries, I thought this was like an experimental concentration camp. It was like they’re experimenting with our bodies.”

In a time when medical safety is a major concern, I.C.E detention centers are carrying out these procedures, apart from the blatant disregard of social distancing norms. Post the release of “Immigration Nation” on Netflix, the unethical and inhumane practices of I.C.E under the Trump Administration have been highlighted.
