The homeowner of the Queens house where thought bomb-making products were discovered after a fire has been charged with careless endangerment, police officers verified Wednesday morning.
Marak Squires, 37, who resides in a home on 19th Street throughout from Astoria Park, was detained at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center– where police brought him Tuesday after discovering him acting erratically in the first-floor apartment unit.
He stayed at the hospital Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, FDNY fire marshals, the FBI and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives browsed the home once again late Wednesday morning– bring out evidence in brown bags, a blue bin and an army green knapsack.
Authorities said they were tipped off to the possible explosives after the house appeared in flames around 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The landlord, who lives on the block, stumbled upon some suspicious bundles while surveying the fire damage, cops stated.
He called the FDNY, which passed along the intel to police, sources said.
NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller said at a Tuesday night press rundown that the findings “included a variety of chemicals, a variety of bundles, a variety of books and manuals” about military dynamites and booby traps.
Detectives also discovered thought ammonium nitrate and wick cables utilized for fuses.
” There was no assembled device discovered, at this point,” Miller noted. “However I think the concern would be, the individual chemicals that were discovered, and what they could integrate to make.”
A nearby landlord whose renters were left during the Tuesday night operation, Anthony Mihailides, said the circumstance could have turned out far worse.
” It might have exploded the whole building,” he said. “Thankfully that didn’t happen.”
” This is like the making of the Unibomber,” he added. “He is the unibomber apprentice.”
Mihailides stated he has seen Squires “maybe twice.”
” He is a nondescript person,” he stated. “You wouldn’t consider anything like this when it concerns him. However then, nowadays, you don’t even know your children.”
