The summer surge of c******irus cases in the United States has been a cause of concern for the nation’s healthcare sector and the government. Some experts have suspected that indoor transmission may have been the cause for such a surge in the southern states of the country. More than 500,000 spiked the affected number in populous States like Florida, California and Texas according to John Hopkins data.
Although the situation has been brought to control by several policies and guidelines encouraging staying indoors and social distancing, the approaching holiday season holds a great chance in further spike in cases.
The nation’s leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has also shown signs of worry for the upcoming holiday celebrations. According to him, staying indoors and family gatherings could increase transmission rates and advised Americans to skip any big Thanksgiving plans.
Fauci cautioned against “gathering together in an indoor setting” with large groups of out-of-town guests. “It is unfortunate because that’s such a sacred part of American tradition – the family gathering around Thanksgiving,” he said. “But that is a risk.”
William Hanage, associate professor of epidemiology and a faculty member in the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamic at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health said, “Indoors in public spaces is one of the places where the largest amounts of risk and transmission are likely to be happening,”
With the holiday season of Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner, staying indoors has become mandatory. This is also an automatic result of the approaching cold weather season.
“If I were to smoke a cigarette (inside), you would see the smoke particles linger,” said Dr. Lewis Nelson, professor and chair of emergency medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. “Whereas outdoors the smoke kind of leaves”, while talking about increase in risk of acquiring infection indoors where droplets have more surfaces to settle on to.
Increasing air flow, ventilation and wearing masks are amongst the several pieces of advice given by healthcare experts to the nation’s citizens.
